A Prayer for Parents of Disabled Children
Most Divine Lord,
You know the heart of a parent
Who loves her child beyond measure,
Wants him to be normal
As the other children of his age,
But struggles to admit
That her son has a disability;
An unseen disability
To be sure,
But a disability that prevents him
From functioning in his daily life.
It is a heartbreaking moment
In a parent’s life
To look at one’s child
And realize that helping him
Is beyond their capacity,
Even though they long to do that.
Provide care for parents who face
This instance of powerlessness
To save their child.
You knew this moment
Witnessing the sacrifice,
When Jesus suffered and died,
With the pained eyes of a parent.
Tenderly touch all parents
In their greatest vulnerability,
Their children.
Let them turn to You
As the source of all salvation.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
